Laser Components has developed the fastest hybrid pulsed laser diode (PLD) for LiDAR sensor systems used to detect objects and measure distance and speed in adaptive cruise control, other advanced driver-assistance systems, and autonomous driving. The QuickSwitch, which uses the time-of-flight measurement principle, is unique in providing in one second up to 200,000 laser pulses with a typical duration of 2.5 ns. High peak power from 30 to 89 W, with short pulse durations of 1.5 to 5 ns and rise time from 500 ps, enable enhanced resolution with faster data gathering and a higher density point cloud.
Unlike similar devices with plastic packaging, the solutions integrates a 905-nm laser diode, switch, and capacitor inside the TO56 metal housing to minimize the inductance loop, provide lower operating voltages, and shorter pulses at a low price. This hybrid solution has an independent ground pin from the signal and supply returns which provides EMI shielding when the switch is active. Other benefits from the hermetically sealed package include excellent reliability, unrivalled overdrive capability, optimum heat handling, and precise chip-to-package alignment.
