Aptiv and Hyundai advance Level 4 and 5 autonomy with joint venture
Autonomous Vehicle Technology announces 2020 ACES Award Winner in Autonomy | Mobility Services category
The challenges of automated driving system development has driven many partnerships among OEMs and suppliers. One of the biggest in 2019 was between Aptiv and Hyundai Motor Group, which announced that they will form an autonomous driving joint venture to advance the design, development, and commercialization of SAE Level 4 and 5 autonomous technologies. It is expected to begin testing fully driverless systems in 2020 and have a production-ready autonomous driving platform available for robotaxi providers, fleet operators, and automotive manufacturers in 2022. The supplier and OEM will each have a 50% ownership stake in the JV valued at a significant $4 billion. Aptiv will contribute its autonomous driving technology, intellectual property, and about 700 employees. Hyundai Motor Group affiliates—Hyundai, Kia, and Hyundai Mobis—will collectively contribute $1.6 billion and $400 million in vehicle engineering services, R&D resources, and access to intellectual property. The JV will be led by Karl Iagnemma, President, Aptiv Autonomous Mobility, and headquartered in Boston, with technology centers across the U.S. and Asia, including Korea. Its Korea operations will serve as a key technology center, a base for vehicle modification, and a testbed for autonomous driving mobility service platforms. South Korea’s 5G infrastructure is anticipated to spur the partnership’s development efforts. The partnership further strengthens Aptiv’s capabilities in the development of advanced driver-assistance systems, vehicle connectivity solutions, and smart vehicle architecture. The resulting AV solutions will provide the needed mobility-extending benefits embodied in such good work being done by Aptiv along with Lyft and the National Federation of the Blind to bring self-driving technology to blind and low-vision passengers, paving the way for the development of a nonvisual user interface and other inclusive design elements. AVs have the potential to provide a level of mobility and independence to underserved communities to enhance lives.
