Proterra announces new drivetrain
Proterra introduced the DuoPower drivetrain for its Catalyst battery-electric vehicles at the American Public Transit Association (APTA) Annual Meeting. Proterra says the Catalyst bus will have nearly twice the horsepower and acceleration and be five times more efficient than a standard diesel bus with the DuoPower drivetrain. In addition, the performance of the DuoPower drivetrain represents a 20% increase in efficiency over the standard ProDrive system.
For the Catalyst E2 max, the DuoPower drivetrain enables a nominal range of 426 mi (686 km) on a single charge. Proterra recently tested the DuoPower drivetrain at the Navistar Proving Grounds in Indiana, reportedly achieving a world-record range for an electric vehicle, where the 40-ft Catalyst E2 max traveled 1,101.2 mi (1772.2 km) on a single charge.
Proterra's DuoPower drivetrain features two electric motors that deliver 510 hp (380 kW), accelerating a Catalyst bus from 0-20 mph (0-32 km/h) in 4.5 seconds, while achieving 26.1 MPGe. In addition, Proterra says it can propel a bus up a 26% grade, which is more than twice the performance of the average 35- or 40-ft diesel bus.
"Proterra's DuoPower drivetrain unlocks new route opportunities. The link between Salt Lake City and Park City on I-80 through Parleys Canyon is an important route for us. Now, with the new drivetrain, this is achievable with electric buses," said Destry Pollard, Park City Transit operations team leader. "We've been really impressed with the way Proterra Catalyst buses have handled mountain roads, and are pleased we can provide state-of-the-art performance, while preserving local air quality here in Park City."
In a related announcement, Proterra revealed that Hool NV has selected the DuoPower drivetrain for its first all-electric motor coach. CX Series operators will be able to test drive the all-electric CX45E coach at the Van Hool factory in late 2018, with deliveries beginning in 2019. The shorter CX35E coach model will be introduced shortly thereafter.
The Van Hool corporate coach is designed for long-range, intercity travel and focuses on quality and comfort. The new CX45E and CX35E models will be co-branded with Proterra and will use Van Hool's CX platform. ABC Bus Companies has helped Van Hool for the last three decades to establish distribution, sales, parts, and service networks.
