Magna to provide engineering services to new automaker VinFast
Magna announced an agreement to provide complete vehicle engineering and development services for VinFast Manufacturing and Trading Company Limited of Vietnam.
Magna said in a statement that its complete vehicle team has responsibility for the full development of two new VinFast models, an SUV and a sedan. By using validated virtual engineering methods, Magna said it is able to support development of the vehicle platform in 12 months.
"This is a great example of how our experience with complete vehicles positions us to support new entrants in the automotive industry," said Günther Apfalter, president Magna International Europe & Magna Steyr. "We are pleased to use our unique capabilities as a full-service mobility technology company to help VinFast create vehicles which meet and exceed global standards."
In addition to complete vehicle development, the scope of the project includes a feasibility study, testing and validation of the vehicles, and support through the vehicle launch process. The vehicles will be built at the new VinFast production plant in Haiphong.
The first two VinFast models will be introduced at the Paris Motor Show in October 2018, which will also mark the debut of the VinFast brand on the international stage.
The design proposals for VinFast’s new city cars were created by Italdesign. More than 60,000 people registered online, from March 7 to 18, to choose the best design out of 40 proposals from design studios and styling centers located all over the world.
Design proposals are for two new city cars, one fully electric, the other with an internal combustion engine (ICE). The cars will be produced within the next few years. This is the first time a Vietnamese car manufacturer will produce a fully electric vehicle (EV).
In a similar manner, in October 2017, Italdesign also won the competition for the design of a SUV and a Sedan.
“Being chosen as a winner for all four design proposals we made for VinFast makes us proud,” Filippo Perini, head of design at Italdesign, said. “If we think that was the people over internet to choose us, that’s a confirmation of how Italdesign is able to make proposals that go along every country’s taste and feeling.”
